Located in the heart of South Philadelphia, 1935 is the semi-private recording studio of independent producers Pete Rydberg and Paul Smith. As established professionals with a combined 30 years experience in the music industry, our backgrounds and experiences with artists from all genres contribute to our work ethic. Always one step ahead in a project, our objective, creative input keeps artists involved and excited, relaxed and confident to craft music with long-lasting impact.
We've worked together on a variety of projects in the past and always looked for an opportunity to find our own space to make music with talented people in a no-pressure environment. That opportunity became reality in 2002 when we set up shop in a former Mummer clubhouse in South Philadelphia. With a relaxed atmosphere that allows people to perform their best, 1935 blends both old and new technology and techniques to create music that's both current and timeless. Paul spent a number of years as an engineer at famed Sigma Sound, the birthplace of the Sound Of Philadelphia, where he worked with everyone from the Roots, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo to Eric Clapton to the Dead Milkmen. He produced the first two critically acclaimed records by Marah and has been the engineer of choice for such luminaries as Steve Earle, Blue Mountain, and John Stirrat of Wilco. He has also spent time as the front of house mixing engineer on national tours as well as the Trocadero and Theater of Living Arts in Philadelphia. Pete's background is just as varied. Currently a producer/engineer /composer at MAJA Audio Group, Philadelphia's premiere audio post-production facility, he's also produced, engineered and performed on many national and local artists' albums such as Bad Brains, Chuck Treece, Matt Pond PA, Bebek, Marah, Jim Boggia, and Three 4 Tens; worked in the Philadelphia theater community as a first-call sound designer and was the Chair of the Music Technology department at the University of the Arts. Pete is also a founding member and guitarist of Beretta76. |
